I love a wide leg pant all year round but especially in summer. Let’s face it, the thought of wearing skinny jeans that cling to your legs on hot and humid days is pretty unbearable. Which is why I pretty much live in skirts and dresses all summer long. But some days I just don’t feel like getting my legs out (read: can’t be bothered to shave) or I want something that’s a bit more carefree than a skirt. This is where the wide leg trouser comes to the rescue. It’s loose, unrestrictive and supremely comfortable (I’m talking pj level comfort), making it the ultimate summer pant you need in your wardrobe.
If like me, you’ve been put off of wide leg pants in the past because you feared they’d end up looking like a shapeless sack, let me put your worries to rest. They can actually be very flattering as long as you watch out for a few key tailoring aspects. The first is to look for a high waist. This shouldn’t be too difficult because most wide leg pants these days are high waisted, for good reason too—the high waist gives the illusion of longer legs (win!). Second, pay attention to where the pants fall. Ideally, you want them to end a couple of inches above your ankle to show off the slimmest part of your leg. If you happen to find the pants of your dream but the length is not quite right, as was the case for me with these Club Monaco ones, a simple hem job can fix that. I had these taken up a couple of inches to fit me better and let me tell you, it made a world of a difference. The pants went from looking frumpy to chic instantly. Finally, choose a leg width that doesn’t overwhelm you. Generally, the taller you are, the more volume you can pull off.
These club monaco pants tick all the right boxes for me and as an added bonus, they’re made of a light breathable fabric that feels light as air. Best of all, they’re extremely versatile which is an aspect I always look for in all my clothing. Here, I’ve dressed them up with some lace up block heels and a silk tank but you could just as easily dress them down with a linen or cotton tank and some lace up sandals. It’s like having a jumpsuit with interchangeable tops, which is also a great hack if you struggle to find jumpsuits off the rack that fit your proportions.
So if you’re dreading the thought of shorts weather or perhaps you’re just not a dresses and skirts all day, everyday kinda gal, do consider adding some cotton or linen wide legs pants into the mix. They’re the perfect desk to dinner garment that will keep you looking and feeling cool all summer long.
