I love a good jumpsuit. I think I can safely say it’s a wardrobe must-have for me. The main reason I’m so enamoured with them is that they are just so versatile. Seriously, give me an occasion, and I’ll give you a solid black jumpsuit. Nine times out of ten, it will work.

Alas, if only it were that easy to actually find one that fits you perfectly—that’s the real challenge for me. I find jumpsuits are tricky to size correctly because there just so many variables to get right—the waist position, the width of the hips, the length—if the fit is off in any one of them, it just won’t look right. I speak from experience here because as a short human, I’ve encountered all of the above fit issues at one point or another.

So today, I have a quasi solution for that in the form of a faux jumpsuit. I figured, instead of forever searching for the perfect jumpsuit, why not just put one together myself by pairing together a top and culottes in the same color. And guess what, it works! On the day I wore this I had multiple people ask me where I got my jumpsuit. Of course, then I had to shatter their dreams (and mine too, truth be told) to explain the illusion.

But the point is, if you haven’t yet found the jumpsuit of your dreams, why not pull together a top and matching pants from your own closet and create one yourself. Here I’m wearing a warm weather appropriate version consisting of two of my most worn summer pieces—a linen shirt and beige culottes (previously worn here and here). I love this ‘dirty’ beige shade (‘flax’ probably sounds better) and obviously the linen fabric is perfect for summer. But you could just as easily recreate this outfit for any weather and any occasion. Think white silk cami and flowing crepe pants for a more formal occasion or an all black look with a turtleneck and some heeled ankle boots. The top and bottom pairings are endless.

So next time you find yourself in a fashion predicament of not knowing what to wear, take a few minutes to root through your closet before you decide to go shopping. Chances are, you’ll have yourself a custom “jumpsuit” that’ll be perfect for the occasion…because jumpsuits usually are!
